Research: Codes and Conventions of Horror Films

Codes

Codes are signs which have a meaning behind them and they can be in two different categories. These are technical and symbolic. Technical codes is a way in which equipment is used to tell a story. This can be done by the way it is edited and the diegetic or non diegetic sound. Symbolic codes are seen through mise-en-scene, it is what can be seen if we really look into whats behind it. This can be shown by a characters actions, it can show how they are feeling or what the character is wearing shows what type of person they are. But some codes can fit into both categories like non-diegetic music is is symbolical and technical.

Conventions

Conventions generally are ways of doing something. There are general conventions like the use of interviewee quotes in a print article, but they are also genre specific.

This is how Codes and Conventions are used in Media Studies:

They are used together in any genre. It is not enough to discuss a technical code used such as camera work and saying how it is conventionally used in a genre.
For example, the technical code of lighting is used in some way in all film genres. It is a convention of the horror genre that side and back lighting is used to create mystery and suspense.

Research: The History Of Horror Films

Horror Films are unsettling films designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. Horror films effectively center on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and strange and alarming events. They deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares, our vulnerability, our alienation, our revulsions, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death and dismemberment, loss of identity, or fear of sexuality.

Horror films go back as far as the onset of films themselves, over a 100 years ago. From our earliest days, we use our vivid imaginations to see ghosts in shadowy shapes, to be emotionally connected to the unknown and to fear things that are improbable. Watching a horror film gives an opening into that scary world, into an outlet for the essence of fear itself, without actually being in danger. Weird as it sounds, there's a very real thrill and fun factor in being scared or watching disturbing, horrific images.

People like horrors because It's just a form of entertainment. Many people love comedies or love stories or dramas. It takes you places that you will never go. Who knows what's around that corner. They leave you guessing and the better ones even set up elaborate puzzles that you have to try to figure out. There is a lot more to horror movies than gore and blood, some work on primal levels of fear or nightmares that you may have. Many horror films are just that, nightmares that someone wrote down and wanted to show others.  It's cathartic in a way, instead of taking out aggression on someone or something, you watch someone else do it instead and since you know it's all special effects you just enjoy the ride.  It's like a roller coaster ride, it takes you on a visual journey that you won't have with other types of films. Sure some horror movies are repetitive and they copy other horror films but a really good film takes you away from the reality of the world and allows you to see what it's like behind the eyes of a killer or victim (depending on the film of course) and it even helps some people deal with their fears.  There is more to horror than meets the eye.

In horror films usually what you won't do, go in to, pick up etc, the characters do otherwise the film will not be scary. That is a convention.

In this clip you can notice a lot of conventions, such as in a scene from candyman, the woman says 'Candyman' and guess what, the Candyman appears and kills her.

I tend not to watch horrors because 1 they scare me and 2, they are quite pointless because they do things that nobody else would do.

Preliminary Task Evaluation

Describe the set brief for the Preliminary Task. What was it that you were asked to create? Use the correct media specific vocabulary and show that you understand the meaning of these terms.
For the Preliminary Task we have to illustrate the processes of pre-production, production and post-production that will be required. We had to create a scene between two people, where one person is sitting down and another opens a door and there should be a few lines of dialogue. It is a continuity task which means that it must have match on action, shot reverse shot, and the 180-degree rule.

Explain everything that you did leading up to the point when you started filming (pre-production). Discuss how this process helped to prepare you for filming.

Before we started filming, we created a 12 shot storyboard. This helped us visualise our scene before we filmed it. We also took pictures of the locations and angles which helped us to make our filming easier so we knew where each shot was going to be taken and the angle of it. Then we had to cast our 2 characters for the scene so we chose me and Taylor for the role. I played the role of Ellie and Taylor played the part of Jenny.

Describe the filming process itself (production). How did this go?

As I had to throw a cup of coffee over Taylor we could only film this bit part once. We had Hannah filming me and Carmen filming Taylor but filmed so you could only see me and Taylor. We managed to get a range of different shots in the scene such as establishing shot, mid shot and a close up. we used the 180 degree rule which led to us being able to use shot reverse shot and made the scene continuous.

Explain the editing stage for your Preliminary Task (post-production). This should include how you applied new skills you have learnt.

I learnt how to use Adobe Premiere Pro which i would he using to edit the scene. I learnt how to cut the short videos i made so i could match on action so the scene would be continuous. I also learnt how to just drag the video down so there was none of the background noises and replace it with some music. So you could still hear the dialogue when the music was playing, i learnt how to make the music quieter.

Evaluate your finished Preliminary Task. How well does it meet the expectations of your set brief? Which parts of it do you think are particularly strong? Where are the weaknesses? What can you identify as being an area fro development when it comes to producing your main task?

We didn't meet the expectations of the set brief and we didn't manage to get match on action in part of the scene. I am walking through the corridor with my sleeves down, walk through the door with my sleeves up and go to my seat with my sleeves down but other than that we met the set brief. I think we didn't mess up with the 180 degree rule as are shot reverse shot is right and our scene continues apart from the sleeves. When we produce our main task I think we should look over are videos before we come to edit it them so we can match on action.

Learning To Edit With Adobe Premiere Pro

Yesterday i didn't know how to use Adobe Premiere Pro. Today we learnt how to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro. I could add sounds, music and effects to make it better.
